2017/2018

Planning, realization and operation of the largest dinosaur park in southern Europe:
Parque dos Dinossauros da Lourinha in Portugal

1

Dinosaur Park International has opened the largest dinosaur open-air museum ever built in southern Europe after only 15 months of construction on 9 February 2018 and put into operation. At the end of July 2018, more than 200,000 small and large guests visited the park "Dinoparque Lourinha" - a complete success!
The park has been planned for several years together with the city of Lourinha and the GEAL group who is responsible for the local paleontological findings.

The entire Dinopark was planned by DPI from zero with all the necessary infrastructure. The project was positively assessed by the Portuguese State, the responsible entities of Turismo de Portugal and Compete 2020, and co-financed with loans granted through public funds.
The imposing entrance diorama, with an image of the rocky coast, where many dinosaur fossils can be found, and a large Supersaurus standing on the cliff, intuitively conveys the impression of what visitors can await visiting the Dinosaur Open Air Museum:
dinosaur experience and adventure based on scientific findings.
In the main building there is a show preparation laboratory in which the local finds are prepared.

Results of this work can be seen in the museum area next to the lab: Real dinosaur nests with eggs and embryos, original skeletons and skeletal reconstructions of the many sensational finds, such as the largest lovcal herbivore found Lourinhasaurus (23 meters long, 3 meters wide and 6 meters high) or the allosaurus-like predatory dinosaur Lourinhanosaurus.

the evolution of prehistoric vertebrates is presented in a natural, wooded terrain. The world's most important finds are shown on a prehistoric 2 km long trail.
The focus is again on the lifelike reconstructions of local finds.

The park was already perceived as an out-of-school learning place from the very first moment and spontaneously booked by many schools. By the beginning of the holiday at the end of July 2018, more than 70,000 schoolchildren have visited the park already.
Experienced exciting guided tours, hands on activities like skeletons digging, preparation of real fossils out of rocks or making casts of dinosaurs and dinosaur painting: Science is fun!

Dinosaurier-Park International (DPI) delivered and mounted 103 life size and life like replicas of dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals from 1 meter up to 23 meter on an area of about 33.500 m² in 2015.
The project included dinosaur reconstructions such as:

• Diplodocus
• Allosaurus
• Archaeopteryx
• Stegosaurus
• Triceratops
• Tyrannosaurus
• Maiasaura

Additionally DPI has delivered additional goods and services and suggestions on all aspects of the operation of a dinosaur park such as:

• Open air trail that features the evolution of vertebrate animals through geological time
• Exterior architecture and design to optimize the visitor flow and operation
• Interactive activities
• Signs and scientific descriptions for each animal
• Delivery of an initial supply for the shop (dinosaur themed articles)

Due to the big success of the first year, a second delivery and setup was made in the beginning of 2016. A complete new themed exhibition called "The Future is Wild", containing 22 models, related signs, posters and banners was added to the park.
To minimize the financial risk for the operating public company which is owned by the city of Ernzen, DPI offered a business model based on a share of the entrance fees between the partners.
